Drowning Cove Empty

Named for it's characteristics, the Drowning Cove is not one where the danger lies in ominous tides suddenly trapping one within, but the inhabitants that reside there. The Drowning Cove is accessed by a long, lonely beach that stretches up to a steep cliff overlooking the ocean's surface, within which the entrance to the cove can be entered from the side via the sand. The entrance, too, faces the ocean, meaning the only way in is to round the corner and become obscured by the stone walls...

Once inside, hand-crafted walkways bridge the small stone 'islands' that poke up from the water, seeming nigh-physics defyingly deep judging by the dark colour. Using these crisscrossed walkways one can reach the cove's back wall wherein tunnels wind further into the darkness and echo with the mischievous laughter of the ocean's daughters.

You see, Midara resembling women crossed with sea-life discovered this cove from the sea and have built up a small community almost like a large delinquent gang, burrowing hallways and rooms for themselves in the rocky embrace of the mountain as well as the depths beneath. Not everyone knows everyone, nor is there an exact hierarchy of rank, the group is built on general mutual respect and disputes are typically solved with open-and-shut scraps (for some reason, they tend to involve kissing).

Encounter Spots

- Drift Village -
Near the beach is a small, quiet village almost entirely set up to support sailors who stop by or wanderers looking to rest and plan ahead for the the next step of their journeys. The ladies of the Cove are generally regarded as rascals by them, with opinions ranging from 'they're harmless punks' to being spoken of in hushed tones: Some think they're vicious and eat humans, others know they're typically more... Affectionate, and are still frightened by that. Stop by on your way to the cove if you've need for a tavern, hotel or some supplies, but watch out for sneaky Midara posing as villagers!

- Entrance Walkways -
Once you turn your back to the beach, several stone 'islands' or platforms stand between you and the rest of the Cove, connected by wooden bridges hand-built by the sea-girls. Sometimes they lurk in the waters beneath their bridges and will leap out to ensnare pretty travellers, leading to either a swift dragging under the cold waves or a fight on one of the islands.

- Winding Tunnels -
Once you clear the islands, next come the tunnels. There are several entrances to these tunnels that lead in different directions, either up into the core of the cliffside or down into the depths. Some tunnels that lead downward lead to water, from here the Midara can quickly get from the ocean to their dwellings without having to expose themselves on the above-water entrance made for luring new toys. It is incredibly difficult to navigate these tunnels if you aren't living there, but one might be able to pick out landmarks such as specific rooms or placements of light sources if they were attentive enough and had spent enough time down there.

- Dwellings -
Each sea-girl makes a home for themselves in the tunnel network, often filling them with 'treasures ' they've collected. One's horde says a lot about them in this community, the types of things they collect informing others of their personality and the size of their dwellings reflecting their power and how long they've been living in the Cove. If you wander in (or are dragged) to one of these rooms, escape might prove difficult.

- Mess Hall -
A huge cavern that the Midara burrowed into and turned into a communal space. Here, daughters of the sea eat, socialize, and partake in their human catches however they see fit. This room is perhaps the most dangerous part of the Cove for an unattended human, as it will be chock-full of Midara who will readily snatch them up and either share them around or start a massive brawl for who gets to sample their body.

- Hot Springs -
Accessibly from the Mess Hall or several other paths in the labyrinthine tunnel network, the hot springs are another part of the Mess Hall's cave system that contain natural bodies of water warmed by vents that cut deep into the planet's mantle, getting their heat from magma at the bottom of said vents. This is a sort of 'elite spot' where Midara come to relax, though you'll quickly get muscled out if someone meaner than you wants your spot, leading to it's reputation of being somewhere where the toughest and most popular sea-girls gather. Fights here will be especially draining on the stamina and get very slick and sweaty very fast.

Non-Midara in the Cove

When a daughter of the sea brings home a human, that human is their 'catch' - a catch can be anything to their respective Midara from a pet to a toy to a lover, but of course what a Midara considers a 'lover' might not entirely match up with the interpretation of humans. Sea-girls will generally leave the catches of their fellows alone out of respect, but if there's bad blood or a particularly meek Midara is approached by a more assertive one, non-Midara visitors may still be in danger even if they're accompanied by their catcher. Catches will typically be asked to stay in their catcher's dwellings for their own safety and not wander off, but it is possible for the catch of a particular notorious daughter of the sea to become well known in their own right, granting them a sort of desirability.

Story Ideas

Maybe your hero is passing through the region and needs a place to stay? Rumours can lead you to the Cove gently, or a Midara might take a shift at the Inn and lead you into a trap that tips you off to their activity.

Maybe she flees back home, or perhaps you're defeated, taken back to her dwelling from which you must escape? Better hope she doesn't try sharing you with friends, or that you don't wander into another sea-girl's room by mistake...

With their love of collecting treasures, maybe your hero is raiding the Drowning Cove to recover a lost item for themselves or a client? There's a lot to play with here, I hope!

(At some point, I'd like to make some kind of document (since this post is already so long) detailing how to run the Drowning Cove as more of a 'dungeon' scenario. I need more knowledge on the subject first, but keep an eye out.)

After fiddling with the original post to fix a bunch of typos and such (whoopsie) and checking out how characters are generally formatted here, allow me to have a go and filling this setting with some faces! I'll start off with just the one since I'm already being a bit cheeky with this double-post.

Ottopi

Appearance:
A non-threatening woman ranging somewhere in the mid 5 foot range for height, her skin is two-tone peach against a burgundy red, with the peach side covering most of her front and the red side covering her back, including the backs of her limbs and as well as the top of her head. Ottopi's body is pudgy, with wide hips, pillowy thick thighs and a soft tummy - befitting of a squishy octopus lady! What's equally as soft and plump are her uniquely round lips, similar to the suckers present on her tentacles.

Right. Those. Ottopi has three small tentacles atop her head that resemble hair, two fanning out near her shoulders and another swooping over the left half of her face like a long bang. The remaining five protrude from her back in a vaguely star-like orientation, behaving in an almost rubbery manner that allows them to compress against her body or stretch out up to twice her own height. She uses these tentacles to snatch up treasures and silence anyone who catches her in the act of doing so, but they also play into the particular type of treasure she covets...

(DM for visual refs, I'm willing to do basic sketches to get across certain details but I'm less willing to post them publicly for the time being  Embarassed)

Preferred Treasure:
As a resident of the Drowning Cove, Ottopi is a lover of collecting things to display in her dwelling, with her particular vice being makeup. Ottopi just loves the human art of decorating oneself and has a particular fondness for the beautiful colour and texture of lipstick! Not only can she paint her actual lips, but Ottopi will often spend hours idly painting her suckers in various shades and patterns, meaning she can mark any careless travellers even at a distance. Her suckers might not be actual lips, but the way she uses them might make you wonder sometimes.


Personality:
This girl's a creative softie at heart, loves to be affectionate and doesn't have a malicious bone in her body (or uh, any for that matter). While she's technically dominant thanks to her passion for painting people with her lips, it's not impossible to make her submit to you either, meaning her lack of viciousness can make her easy pickings for other Midara such as her fishy friends looking to blow off steam. If she defeats an opponent and has her way with them, she's got no problems letting them go home free after the fact with the catch that they'll be coated head to toe in her kiss marks.

If you offer, she'll gladly jump at the chance to put makeup on someone else, given that she lacks things like eyelashes or proper hair to style (not makeup, but she has a few brushes lying around). She might be a little too eager though, so watch you don't give her the wrong idea and get caught up in a situation you didn't want.


Now, for the moveset!

Ottopi's specialty lies in the art of restraining her victims with her cuddly tentacles and marking them with her lips and suckers, coating their entire bodies to fulfil the ultimate purpose of lipstick: imprinting it on others <3! Due to her love of the stuff, it's likely she'll start a battle with painted lips, but her suckers take much longer, so you could luck out there.

Passive Mechanic: Cuddly
Ottopi, being fairly slow, has a tough time getting in to attack her foes without restraining them first. Unless she manages to inflict Bind, she'll have Disadvantage. On the flipside, she deals one extra point of damage for every attack made against a bound opponent.

Passive Mechanic: Excitement
Starting at 0, Ottopi can build her excitement in numerous ways. The more Excited Ottopi gets, the more she'll come out of her shell and become more assertive with her lovey-dovey techniques, so watch out for these criteria:
  • Ottopi lands a Critical Success on one of her attacks.
  • Ottopi's opponent puts on lipstick, or has it applied to them.
  • Ottopi's opponent acts romantically towards her: handholding, affectionate whispers, heartfelt compliments, that sort of thing.
  • Ottopi's opponent chooses to kiss her of their own accord.


Treasure Snatch
Ottopi stretches her tentacles and attempts to grab a far away person or object. Maximum 10ft range.

Inflicts Bind. This is her go-to technique for ensnaring foes and dealing with her Cuddly passive. Based on DM flavour, this could potentially be used to disarm opponents.


Pucker Up/Sucker Up
Ottopi, with her tentacles wrapped thoroughly around her target, will attack by kissing with her round, squishy lips or the suckers on her tentacles. This will in most cases leave perfect 'O' shaped marks wherever she connects, meaning if you catch her with painted suckers you could get a whole belt of them on you in one go.

Deals 2 damage (3 if opponent is suffering from Bind) and may inflict Charm if the opponent in particularly weak to lips.


Lovely Lashing
Using a tentacle like a whip, Ottopi slaps an opponent at range. If her suckers are painted, it could leave marks.

Deals 1 damage (2 if opponent is suffering from Bind). Roll for Stun (enemy skips next turn) and succeed if Success. Guaranteed Stun on Crit Success.


Lovestruck Glomp
Ottopi can't contain herself anymore, leaping towards a target with her arms outstretched to give them a whirlwind of kisses! For every point of Excitement Ottopi has, she'll smooch her opponent and paint whatever lipstick she's wearing where she does.

Requires Excitement. Each kiss does a single point of damage and the opponent must roll to push Ottopi off once she lets them breathe, lest they be Bound by her laying on top of them (does not apply to characters who are larger than Ottopi or have some form of super strength, they will auto-succeed.) This move has the potential to deal lots of damage and inflict bind, but is strongly variable based on Ottopi's Excitement and her roll:
  • Failure: Ottopi trips and falls on her face, becoming Knocked Down (skips her next turn as she gets up)
  • Critical Failure: Ottopi trips and bangs her head, inflicting Knocked Down and dealing 2 points of recoil damage.
  • Critical Success: Ottopi has a surge of infatuation, kissing her opponent for twice her current Excitement count.



Apply a Treasure/Apply a Horde
Ottopi applies lipstick, producing a hidden tube from between her breasts or beneath her tentacleho use four of her long tentacles to quickly paint the remaining fifth's suckers in the span of a turn. She'd only do this if she really wanted to cover you in marks, since it uses up a lot of her product all at once.

Applies Lipstick to Ottopi (specifically if it's her actual lips, suckers are specified in narration rather than a status effect since that'd be awkward to track that way), only fails if a Critical Failure is rolled, in which case she'll either drop her tube or mess up some other way, such as flinching and smearing the makeup on her cheek.


Squeeze~
Using both arms and her tentacles, Ottopi gives her target a big hug, squishing their face into her breasts or perhaps her tummy, depending on the height difference and her awareness of opponent weaknesses. If she's considerably smaller than her opponent, this may instead involve her also wrapping her legs around the target and shoving her own face into their chest, making it difficult to move or shake her off. This move requires Ottopi to be closer to the target than Treasure Snatch, operable at only slightly above melee range.

Inflicts Bind and deals a single point of damage for each turn Ottopi is squeezing (not affected by Cuddly). Can be used from a pre-existing bound state to transition into the attack and stacks with other damage sources such as Pucker Up/Sucker Up - think of it like Wrap from Pokemon. Struggling out of the Bind will also stop this attack.


Waterbed
A sort of 'super' varient of Squeeze~ that can only be used while the opponent is Bound, meaning Cuddly is irrelevant. Ottopi lowers the enemy onto the floor and props up their head on her tentacle as a pillow. Using the rest to hold herself over the opponent, she then drops down and sits on them to get comfortable.

Deals 4 damage every turn she sits on the opponent's face, 2 damage if she's sitting anywhere else. Struggling out of this one also naturally breaks the Bind. While there'd theoretically be nothing stopping her from using this all the time over Squeeze~, it's not in her character to do so, meaning it'll typically be saved.


Lady's Waiting Lips
Ottopi is swept up in a romantic delusion and puckers up, thinking her opponent wants to give her a kiss. Upon noticing Ottopi, the opponent is rolled on whether or not the decide to give into her, with writer's choice on whether it's out of pity or infatuation. Since she thinks it was all the opponent's idea, this gives Ottopi a point of Excitement.

If the opponent takes pity and kisses her on the cheek, nothing will happen except Ottopi gaining Excitement (and perhaps the hero being embarrassed). A kiss on the lips will deal 2 damage of recoil to the kisser.

On Critical Success, Ottopi opens her eyes as the opponent closes in for the kiss, becoming flustered and slapping a tentacle onto their face. Regardless of what they were going to do, the opponent is smooched by Ottopi's suckers as she writhes in lovestruck joy, dealing 4 damage.


Automatic: Natural Makeup
When Ottopi's Excitement level goes beyond it's maximum of 8, she can't contain herself anymore and will suddenly release bursts of ink from the tips of her tentacles as well as her crotch. This ink does no damage and is not toxic to ingest, but it has a strong smell and a taste that's hard to describe, let alone wash out of one's mouth. This technique really does nothing but humiliate it's victim (as well as Ottopi, 9 times out of 10) but has the functionality of resetting her Excitement count. No, it is not her pee. If you say that, she'll cry.

When Ottopi releases ink, roll to see how many points of Excitement she is able to retain. Start back at 0 and add one point back for each Success rolled, but stop rolling and leave the count where it is the moment you get a Failure. Crits are not counted for these rolls.

I don't have much else to do tonight so I think I'll try out for girl number #2's sheet, from there I might see about setting up some kind of RP to test the setting out with anyone interested? It also might be a good idea to add a section to the Cove ladies' bios talking about what their dwellings in the Cove look like, but those could also just come up in RP context all the same.

Sounds cute! My other two concepted girls are a shark (originally a piranha, but I might work that into a sort of 'basic enemy type' for the Cove instead) and an anglerfish. I'm gonna try writing up the shark next, but would you like me to post some kind of blank version of the format I used for Ottopi's information so that you or others could easily make their own additions to the Cove?

Appearance:
A red haired mermaid, wearing seashells on her large girls. Her lower body is covered in pink scales that glimmer in the moonlight.

Preferred Treasure: She loves to collect musical instruments as well as music boxes. Anything repeated to music is attractive to her.

Personality: She is romantic minded. She hopes to find a romantic partner to settle down and have a family with. She will usually try to draw people in with her music in order to seduce them. She is a natural singer who loves to enchant instruments in her home to accompany her singing or to set the mood.

Dwelling: She lives in a large spacious cave that is home to a large pool of water that she relaxes in. She has various musical instruments around that play various songs based on her mood.

Moves:

Mechanic: Alluring melody: As the battle progresses, her target will find themselves more in love with the music of her home as well as her singing. She will try to captivate them by building up their desires. Every 3 rounds, the opponent gets a stack of Siren’s song.

Captivating Kiss: Sabrina pulls her target close and plants a kiss on their lips. Deals 2 WP.

Captivating Embrace: Sabrina pulls her target close and starts to cuddle them in her pool. Deals 1 WP and Binds.

(Follow up to Captivating Embrace) Captivating Song: Sabrina will start to sing to her target as she cuddles them. Adds one stack of Siren’s song as long as she has them in her bind.

Captivating Clevage: Sabrina pulls the target close and smothers them in her cleavage. She won’t hold the target there for long due to wanting them to like her. Deals 3 WP and can turn into a bind if target request or has a weakness to her girls.

Captivating handjob: Sabrina pulls the target close to her as she starts to tease their crotch. Deals 2 WP and inflicts charmed.

Captivating Romance: Finisher only useable when either the target has 0 WP or 10 Siren’s Song. Sabrina starts to sing a very sultry song as the target is compelled to strip naked and to join her in her pool. After an intense night of lovemaking, the target will either wake up either on a beach (without any clothes on) or still in her cave but now in love with her as they continue with their new relationship.

Saaku

Appearance:
Saaku is a tall, lean Midara hitting just over 6 feet tall and rocking defined muscles despite keeping a slim frame. It's clear her physique comes mostly from heavy swimming; she opts to wear a form-fitting wetsuit that's been shredded off some poor diver and sewed back together in multiple pieces to form her outfit, showing not only her aggressive nature and willingness to steal from humans but also her popularity among other Cove-dwelling Midara (she certainly didn't sew it herself). Said outfit consists of naught but the neck, some of the chest (the underside of her breasts are exposed) and some vague approximation of a pair of shorts, coloured a deep navy blue. Her skin is a rough, pale cobalt with a soft white underside coating her chest, tummy, inner thighs, inner arms and around her face up to where the eyes sit. Her brow segments where the human-looking part of her head ends and shark-like fins protrude directly up and to the left and right, with the back extending out into a protrusion resembling a shark's tail (complete with tailfins) that's long enough to touch her upper back.

Preferred Treasure:
Saaku loves heavy things like weights, scrap metal and old wheels, using them to train when she isn't out swimming. She enjoys to make a show of lifting many heavy objects at once while they're stacked on top of eachother, including having fellow Midara or their captured human toys sitting atop the pile. Speaking of humans, her personal touch is stealing the clothes off of any victims she may have (in fights or otherwise) and keeping them for herself, seen clearly with her normal outfit.

Personality:
She's the roughest, toughest wave you've ever gotten wiped out by, a crude tomboyish bully that loves to show off and prove herself in just about anything you can imagine. Saaku is popular in the Cove due to her larger-than-life presence and impressive feats of physical strength and athletics, but she absolutely terrorizes meeker Midara in an attempt to 'toughen them up' and sees humans as challenges for her to overcome. It may seem pretty terrible to be on her bad side (or god-forbid her 'mentor' side) but like most tomboys of her ilk, Saaku is actually fiercely loyal and has a soft side she saves only for those special someones she knows she can trust. She might shove you into a locker or two, but if anyone else shoves you around, they'll be hobbling away with two black eyes and a set of broken teeth.

Her biggest secret is that, like sharks, she cannot float in place. If she ever went to a pool rather than an open body of water, she'd need floaties.

Dwelling:
As mentioned prior, Saaku's room in the Cove is covered in piles of random heavy debris she's salvaged from the ocean or human settlements. The dwelling itself is considerably spacious to fit them all, and sometimes feels like a junkyard inside the mountain if you look at it a certain way. There's a special corner where Saaku hordes the clothes of her human victims... She sleeps on them like a cat, curled up.

Saaku's fighting style is fast, relentless and focuses mostly on stripping away her target's ability to defend themselves from her bullying offense. Saaku's ego drives her to utterly dominate her opponents by tearing off their clothes and marking them with her teeth, but she's not above the typical kissing either - just don't expect her to be gentle.

Passive Mechanic: Rough Skin
A simple one. While her white bits are soft, the pale blue parts of Saaku's skin are extremely rough, like sandpaper! Direct contact with her back, the top of her head, the outside of her arms or any part of her leg that's not the inner thigh will cause 1 point of damage. Doesn't apply if the touch is very gentle and careful, but headpat this shark at your own risk.

Passive Mechanic: Work Up
The more Saaku fights, the more her heart thumps! If a battle goes on for longer than 10 turns, she becomes faster and more aggressive while also working up a sweat. Grappling attacks made during this state have a chance to inflict Dazed as the enemy is overwhelmed by her scent.


Thrash:
Saaku whips her neck around, smacking an opponent at close range with the tail on the back of her head.

Deals 1 damage, plus Rough Skin if the contact area isn't protected by armour or clothing.


Gnaw:
Using her sharp teeth, Saaku bites down on an opponent hard enough to leave marks if the contact area isn't properly armoured.

Deals 2 damage and heavily damages clothing, but armoured opponents will resist her jaws. Instead, Saaku bites at chinks in the target's armour to focus purely on damaging it.


Riptide:
COMMAND GRAB. In all seriousness, this has Saaku attempt to grapple with a foe and leads into several different follow-ups. Requires her to be up close and personal, as always.

Inflicts Bind and unlocks follow-up attacks. Resisting will throw her back and leave her open instead.


Riptide: Choppy Waters
Saaku, while grappling, nibbles on her opponent's neck, chest, tummy, anywhere sensitive that she can get a reaction with. Will definitely make eye-contact the entire time and make it weird.

Deals 2 point of damage for each turn the Bind lasts, operates in the same way as Gnaw in that heavy armour will resist this attack at the cost of being heavily damaged. She'll usually manage to snap some important bit holding the armour together if it lands, costing you protection of a limb or something similar.


Riptide: Cannonball!
From Riptide, Saaku wrestles her opponent beneath her and sits on their head, pinning their arms up in the air by the wrists. Tends to wriggle around and gloat.

Deals only one point of damage per turn the bind is in effect, but rolls to Struggle will be disadvantaged due to the oppressive nature of the pin. If an opponent swallows their pride and taps out, she'll let them off free, but her next attack will be a guaranteed hit as she punishes you for being a wimp.

Riptide: Titanic Impact
Saaku lifts an opponent caught in Riptide over her head and slams them into the ground, taking a moment to gloat over them.

Deals 2 damage and has a severe chance of leaving the target Knocked Down and prone. Saaku's pride prevents her from using Riptide again if this move inflicts Knocked Down, preventing any chaingrab/stunlock shenanigans.


Bully:
Moving away from her Riptide series of moves but remaining in the restraining category, Bully has Saaku roughly grab her opponent by the collar or back of the head and forcefully kiss them. Her teeth make this a rather nerve-wracking experience and her tongue is surprisingly long (is that even accurate shark anatomy!?)

Deals 2 points of damage, particularly charmed foes might accidentally try to hug her back and hurt themselves due to Rough Skin. Humiliating.


FINISHER: Davy Jones' Locker
Saaku is fierce enough to have devised this finishing special attack that can only be performed if the opponent is on 0WP, or 5 if she's Worked Up. Saaku produces a metal locker from her collection and leaps into the air, slamming it down with enough force to knock the door open. She then kicks her opponent into the locker and smugly strides over, letting herself in and closing the door. The locker violently shakes and thrashes as she does... Something, then takes her leave with her opponent staying locked inside.



My love of fighting games certainly came to the forefront here, lmao. Saaku is definitely the most contact heavy, actually violent character I think I'll make unless I happen to end up making more tomboy bully types that like to grapple. As always, lemme hear that feedback if you've got any!

Fun fact: Her getting stunned if you break her Riptide is a nod to her inability to stay still, as well as that whole thing about punching sharks in the nose to disorient them.

She would beat you up, take your lunch money and make you walk to the nurse's office in your underwear.

Which is probably a fantasy several people on this site have, lmao

Now that I have these two characters, I'm pretty confident in starting an RP using this setting and cast. Do you have any requests? I'm willing to write Ottopi and Solas interacting, or we could perhaps look for a second person and do Ottopi and Sabrina versus Solas and a friend Smile

We can start with Salos vs Ottopi. If you wanted to do a two on 1 you could alternate between the two if you wanted to. I admit I would be up for fighting any of them.

Well if his weakness is being dolled up and covered in lipstick, it would be almost unfair not to pair him up with Ottopi lol, plus as my first I feel like she deserves the honour. Do I just go and make the post in the other board and see you there, then?
